One bus. One excited group. A lot of rain. Plenty of mud. And one unforgettable day in the Sahyadris.
Some experiences are planned on a calendar. Others become stories that stay with you long after the journey ends. Our recent Rajmachi Open Camp with I-xplore was one of those stories.
What began as an early morning departure from Mumbai turned into a day filled with laughter, challenges, teamwork, breathtaking views, new friendships and moments that reminded us why experiential learning is so powerful.
Because Rajmachi wasn't just about reaching a fort. It was about discovering what happens when young people step outside their comfort zones and into an adventure together.
The Journey Starts Before the Trek
The day began early. As students gathered at the pickup points across Mumbai, sleepy faces slowly transformed into excited conversations. Bags were loaded. Seats were claimed. Introductions began. And before long, the journey was underway.
Breakfast on the bus gave everyone a chance to settle in and get to know the people around them. Some participants arrived with their friends. Many arrived alone. But that didn't last very long.
Soon, UNO cards appeared. Conversations became louder. Laughter travelled from one seat to another. Groups started forming. Inside the bus, strangers slowly became teammates.
Outside the window, the city began to fade away. As we crossed the Atal Setu and moved towards the Sahyadris, towering buildings gave way to green hills, mist-covered valleys and waterfalls flowing down distant mountainsides.
The adventure had already begun. And we hadn't even started trekking yet.
Stepping Into the Monsoon Wilderness
By the time we reached the trailhead, the excitement was impossible to hide. The comfortable bus seats were replaced by muddy shoes, backpacks and winding mountain paths.
The popular Rajmachi trail during monsoon is known for its stunning scenery, and it certainly did not disappoint. The route was alive with greenery. Streams crossed the trail. Waterfalls appeared around unexpected corners. Clouds drifted across the mountains. Every turn seemed to reveal something new.
But the beauty of the trail wasn't the only thing that made the experience special. It was the way people responded to it. Phones slowly disappeared into backpacks. Conversations became more meaningful. People started paying attention to the world around them.
For many participants, it was a rare opportunity to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature.
When Challenges Become Opportunities
Of course, every adventure comes with its challenges. The trail brought slippery patches, uneven ground, rocky sections and steeper climbs that demanded patience and focus.
At times, the climb felt demanding. There were moments when tired legs questioned every uphill step. There were moments when participants stopped to catch their breath. And there were definitely moments when someone asked, “Are we there yet?”
But something interesting happened along the way. Whenever the trail became difficult, the group became stronger. Someone would offer a helping hand. Someone would wait for the person behind them. Someone would encourage a friend who felt tired.
Without even realizing it, participants were developing qualities that no classroom can truly teach: leadership, teamwork, resilience, empathy and confidence.
The trek slowly stopped being about reaching a destination. It became about supporting one another through the journey.
Reaching Udhewadi
After hours on the trail, the group finally reached Udhewadi. Tired? Absolutely. Happy? Even more.
The feeling of accomplishment was visible on every face. Participants who had doubted themselves earlier in the day were now proudly looking back at the trail they had completed.
And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons adventure teaches us. We are often capable of much more than we think.
After a short break and some time to recharge, one final challenge still awaited: the climb towards Shrivardhan Fort.
Above the Clouds
Step by step, the group continued. The climb demanded effort. But the reward waiting at the top made every step worthwhile.
As participants reached Shrivardhan Fort, the weather began to change. Rain fell softly. Clouds rolled across the mountains. Mist filled the valleys. And within moments, the entire landscape transformed.
The mountains appeared and disappeared through the clouds. The valleys vanished beneath a blanket of white. For a few magical moments, it felt as though we were standing above the clouds.
Everyone stopped. Some took photographs. Others simply stood quietly and absorbed the view. But one thing was common: everyone smiled. Not because they had reached a fort. But because they had earned the moment.
Sometimes the most beautiful rewards arrive after the hardest climbs.
More Than Just a Lunch Break
Back in Udhewadi, lunch was waiting. And after hours of trekking, it tasted even better than expected.
As everyone gathered together, conversations flowed naturally. Stories from the trail were shared. Funny moments were replayed. Friendships continued to grow.
What had started as a group of individuals now felt like a community. And that is one of the things we value most at I-xplore. Experiences have a unique way of bringing people together.
One Last Adventure
The return journey brought another unexpected highlight: the jeep ride. Bumpy roads. Sharp turns. Mountain views. Plenty of laughter. And more than a few excited reactions.
What could have simply been transportation became another memorable part of the day. Because sometimes the best moments are the ones you never planned for.
More Than a Trek
Rajmachi gave us waterfalls. It gave us forests. It gave us muddy shoes. It gave us tired legs. It gave us clouds. It gave us unforgettable views.
But most importantly, it gave us experiences that helped us grow. Adventure teaches lessons that are difficult to learn anywhere else. It teaches us to trust ourselves. To support others. To embrace challenges. To stay curious. To keep moving forward even when the path becomes difficult.
